Mission Statement

Black Midwifery Collective

Divin Geri Endijen is proud to be apart of a Black Midwifery Collective where a group a like minded Obstetricians, Senior Midwives, New Midwives and students across Pennsylvania have partnered to restore the art of midwifery, and equitable access to midwifery services amongst the global majority.

Maternal Mortality Rates amongst Black and Brown parents are significantly higher than other racial groups across the United States of America. Due to biases and even racism to many parents have lost their lives due to their concerns or complaints not being taken seriously.  According to the CDC on average 60% of maternal deaths are preventable. Additionally, infant mortality rates are  highest amongst Black babies for the same reasons. A recent study identified that racial concordance between provider and patient can eliminate or reduce such disparities amongst black infants. The findings suggest that when Black newborns are cared for by Black providers, the mortality penalty they suffer, as compared with White infants, is halved. Research suggests concordance is not only salient for adults. Indeed, a growing body of literature explores the question of whether actors exhibit different levels of bias toward both children and adults.

Until the 20th century, most women delivered with Black and immigrant midwives, who modeled patient-centered care before the term even existed; but since then midwifery has been systematically discredited. It is high time that we restore this profession. States that have done the most to integrate midwives into the healthcare workforce tend to have the best outcomes for mothers and babies. Pennsylvania ranks 13th in terms of the lowest degree of midwifery integration.

It's time indeed.
